Introduction to Athletics

Athletics has been part of the Paralympic Games since 1960 and always attracts the largest number of spectators. The sport offers a wide range of competitions and events and is open to male and female athletes in all impairment groups.

Athletes compete according to their functional classification in each event. Some compete in wheelchairs and some with prostheses, while those who are visually impaired receive guidance from a sighted guide.

Athletics Events

Athletics events that include Cerebral Palsy athletes are:

Track events: sprint (100m, 200m, 400m); middle distance (800m, 1,500m); long distance (3,000m 5,000m) and relay races (4x100m)

Field events: long jump, club throw, discus, shot put, javelin

Eligible Impairment Types

The impairment types that are in bold and red are “Cerebral Palsy” categories, termed Coordination Impairment classes.

Ataxia

Athetosis

Hypertonia

Impaired Muscle Power

Impaired Passive Range of Movement

Intellectual Impairment

Limb Deficiency

Leg Length Difference

Short Stature

Visual Impairment

Classification Classes including Cerebral Palsy athletes

In athletics the classification class consists of a prefix “T” or “F” and a number. The prefix T stands for “track” and F stands for “field”. It indicates for which events the classification class applies, either for track or for field events.

Ataxia, athetosis and hypertonia – Classification classes T32-T38, F32-F38

The 30s classifcation classes are allocated to athletes with athetosis, ataxia and/or hypertonia – often conditions associated with cerebral palsy or traumatic brain injury. The impairments typically affect the ability to control legs, trunk, arms and/or hand function. The lower the number is, the more significant the activity limitation.

Athletes in the classes 32-34 compete in a seated position, e.g. in wheelchair racing or using a throwing chair. By contrast, athletes in the sport classes 35-38 show a better function in their legs and better trunk control and therefore compete standing, e.g. in running events, long jump or throwing events.

In addition there are also the following classes for other impairment types:

  • Visual impairment – Classes T/F11-T/F13
  • Intellectual impairment – ClassT20/F20
  • Short stature – Classes T40/ F40, T41/F41
  • Limb deficiencies – Classes: T42/F42 – T46/F46, T47
  • Impaired muscle power or impaired range of movement – Classes T51-54; F51-57
